John The Almsgiver

John The Almsgiver
Patriarch of Alexandria (qq.v.) from 610-619; saint. He was a native of Cyprus (q.v.) and a simple layman before he was elevated to the rank of patriarch. He was renowned for his support of Orthodoxy (q.v.) against Monophysitism (q.v.), as well as for his charity. Both John Moschos, and Sophronios (qq.v.), who lived in Alexandria at the time, subsequently wrote biographies (vitae [q.v.]) of the saint, as did a fellow Cypriot, Leontios of Neapolis. These works provide a vivid picture of life in early seventh-century Egypt (q.v.).
